Minecraft XP Farm 1.21 using allay and silverfish java and bedrock

The Ultimate Minecraft Silverfish XP Farm

An efficient allay silverfish farm for maximum XP gains

Why Build This Farm?

If you're looking for a reliable source of XP in Minecraft without the hassle of complex mob farms, this silverfish farm is perfect for you. Unlike traditional mob farms, this design:

  • Doesn't require looting (since silverfish don't drop items)
  • Doesn't waste XP on mending
  • Provides consistent spawns in a controlled environment
  • Is compact and easy to build in survival

Farm Mechanics Explained

This innovative farm uses some clever Minecraft mechanics to maximize silverfish spawns:

Core Components:

  1. 4 Campfires with Allays trapped on top
  2. Dispenser facing the Allays with splash potions of infestation
  3. Water streams pushing silverfish to a central 4x4 hole
  4. Armor stand in the killing area

How the Infestation Mechanic Works:

When a mob is affected by the Infestation effect and takes damage, there's a 10% chance that 1-3 silverfish will spawn. The silverfish appear at the center of the affected entity's bounding box.

Key points about the Infestation effect:

  • The damage source doesn't need to reduce the entity's health
  • Potion potency doesn't affect spawn rate or quantity
  • Infested entities emit gray, silverfish-shaped particles

Why Allays on Campfires?

This design uses Allays because:

  • They take constant damage from campfires but heal themselves quickly (2♥ per second)
  • Their rapid healing prevents them from dying while maintaining the damage trigger
  • We can breed them to increase spawn chances (more Allays = more silverfish)

Breeding Allays for Maximum Efficiency

To duplicate Allays:

  1. Play a Music Disk in a Jukebox near the Allay
  2. When the Allay starts dancing, right-click it with an Amethyst Shard
  3. The Allay will duplicate, but has a 5-minute cooldown before it can duplicate again

How to Brew Potions of Infestation

You'll need to brew splash potions of infestation for the dispenser:

  1. Create an awkward potion (water bottle + nether wart)
  2. Add a stone to the awkward potion in the brewing stand

Farm Construction Details

The farm is built in a 10x10 block cube with these features:

  • Water streams push silverfish to the center
  • Central 4x4 hole where the killing happens
  • Armor stand placed in the killing area to help with positioning

Optimal Sword Enchantments

Since we're focusing on XP collection and not items, here are the best enchantments:

  • Sharpness V - For maximum damage
  • Unbreaking III - To make your sword last longer
  • Fire Aspect II - Extra damage over time
  • Knockback II - Helps control silverfish movement
  • NOT Mending - We want to collect XP, not repair the sword
  • NOT Looting - Silverfish don't drop items anyway

Tips for Optimal Performance

  • Build the farm in a perimeter or underground to prevent other mobs from interfering
  • Use hoppers under the killing area if you want to collect any rare drops
  • Keep a supply of splash potions of infestation in a chest nearby
  • Consider adding a simple redstone clock to automate potion dispensing

Final Thoughts

This silverfish farm provides one of the most efficient XP sources in Minecraft once properly set up. The combination of Allays' rapid healing with the infestation mechanic creates a constant stream of silverfish for your XP needs. Since silverfish don't drop items, you don't have to worry about inventory management, and you can focus purely on leveling up!
